Abilene Christian Univ seeks a Director of Choral Activities to lead one of the oldest and most well-established choral programs in Texas.
Qualifications: Doctorate preferred (Masters required). Substantial record of success teaching at the secondary public school level. Accomplished conductor and musician with demonstrable potential for success teaching at the collegiate level. Preference will be given to candidates with success in the administration and organization of all facets of a university choral program, including the recruitment and retention of quality students, establishing and maintaining positive relationships with public school choir directors, and university/community service.
Primary duties: Conduct the A Cappella Chorus and University Chorale; Administer, promote and recruit for an established, comprehensive choral program; Teach undergraduate conducting classes and secondary choral methods; Supervise choral student teachers.
Other duties: May be assigned depending on the candidate’s qualifications and departmental needs.
The Department of Music is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music and a member of the Texas Association of Schools of Music. The department offers the BA in music, the BM in piano and vocal performance, and the BM with teacher certification. The music department currently employs 12 full-time faculty and 10 adjunct faculty and has an enrollment of approximately 70 majors. The A Cappella Chorus and University Chorale include over 120 music majors and non-majors from throughout the University. University Chorale performs one to two concerts per semester and samples a wide variety of literature from the sixteenth-century to the present. The A Cappella Chorus presents four concerts per year, one of which regularly includes a choral masterpiece in combination with the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra. Recent masterworks have included the Vaughan Williams Mass in G minor, the Beethoven Ninth Symphony, and Orff’s Carmina Burana. Over the last twenty years, the University has supported A Cappella in tours throughout the state, region, and country.
